peak: pulses

06_02_06

Here's a peak of a track in progress right now called:
pulses.
The idea behind the track is to have a few different guitar lines which slowly pusle, grow, and meander. Fairly dry at the moment, no interesting tweaks of effects, just raw melody and beat. The end of the track is still in motion, and probably will not stay the way it's currently stated. I'm unhappy with part of my own formula of "intro, build, climax" at the moment. I think there's a different direction this piece can go towards altogether. Comments of whatever variety are open.

I also would like to give a special thanks out to the people over at the 10000 days site for stopping by to check out some tunes. Cheers.

reboot and 9weeks

05_01_06

I haven't been posting as much as I would like lately. I've been spending some time figuring out how to use Wordpress for the 9weeks project. You can go here for more information on that.

After playing around with Wordpress for about a week now, I'm stunned at how it works out to be both useful in terms of blogging but also as a CMS. I'll be updating this site to Wordpress as soon as I've got my head wrapped around the template system a little more.

Other things to look forward to on the list of tasks: I'm working on a score for the EGC Mass, and will post that when its in at least a full draft version. One of the purposes I had for this site was to begin to open up the veins to the public and allow myself some extreme exposure to criticism. And I needed a more simple way of doing that. Hopefully this new WP system I'm planning out will provide me with more tools to accomplish that. Stay tuned.

audio relay project

03_21_06

I'd like to take the chance to thank Rosanne Altstatt for the following oppurtunity. This looks to be an interesting event, and I'm honored to be among some really excellent musicians involved with this project. I'm only sorry I couldn't be there in person to see the actual event. Information below:

Please join us at 527 Main Street in Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday, March 25 from 9 pm to midnight for Lafayette's inaugural broadcast via the autonomous radio station Audio Relay, which was designed and built by Chicago's Brennan McGaffey for Temporary Services.

This event is open to the public, which is encouraged to bring:

Any sounds you have made and would like to broadcast
An FM radio – to receive and amplify the local area broadcast
CDs – if you would like to trade sounds with others at the CD burning stations

On FM 88.9, the Audio Relay will send the sounds of local artists over the airwaves and into a small area of Lafayette. The following days will feature non-commercial sounds by artists from Europe, North America and South America, broadcast intermittently from different parts of Greater Lafayette, always between 9 pm and 12 am. This is an attempt to widen the scope of Lafayette's local radio, which is currently limited to classic rock, top ten pop charts, top ten classical music and plenty of religion.

Broadcasts and information on this project can be found at radiochiguiro starting Monday, March 27.

Artists include: 0100101110101101.org, Dave Allen, anonymous, ArtLab Charlotte Cullinan and Jeanine Richards, AZ, Luca Bertini, Candice Breitz, Hans Brändli, Andrew Bucksbarg, Charizma, Tony Cokes, Shawn Decker, Paul Dickinson, Dr. Muu, Barnaby Drabble, William Engelen, Alex Fahl, Jason Freeman, Kirsten Geisler, Jårg Geismar, Dani Gal, Eugenia Gortchakova and Wolfgang Wortmann, Gudrun Gut und monika enterprise, Hammermusik, Norbert Herber, Tim Jaeger, Mikael Jorgensen, Markus Kaiser, Kammerflimmer Kollektif, Keyboard + Nobara, Korpys/Löffler, Andreas Korte, Mischa Kuball, Stephen Lacy, Achim Lengerer, David McKenzie, Christian Marclay, Christoph Micklisch, Otto, Lisl Ponger, RAKEHILL, Honke Rambow, Egill Sæbjörnsson, ockham (Brandon Schakola), Rüdiger Schlömer, Jochen Schmidt, Hartwig Schwarz, Tim Sharp, spurse, Toliver, Sven Vieweg, Dennis Vriend, Detlef Weinrich, Scott Wolniak, Volker Zander, Georg Zeitblom, Philip von Zweck … more to come.

update: audio

02_21_06

Greetings! There's some updates on the audio page.

I've been rather busy over the last week, so the update has been a bit longer than i would have liked. But in the end, there's some other juicy stuff to listen to.

Also, I've been thinking more about what i'd like to use this page for, to mark some thougts about my process of writing. Over the last few years its come down to "when i have time" kinds of audio. If i sit down to work on some music, usually i'll just work on something for maybe 3 days tops. It's been a while since i sat and just plugged away for weeks on end--well, alright, maybe once or twice. "why should i trust you" pretty much made me drop guitar for a few years, felt too painful to write. I guess that was the reason it was the first thing i had to conquer when coming back to working with the guitar again. Which brings me to something i've been struggling with: how to make a larger leap into experimental audio, from the electronic/computational side as well as guitar. This is problematic for me, and I plan on documenting what solutions i'm coming up with. In the end, it looks like i'll end up moving over to max/msp or something similar. So expect to see some griping here and there as i trudge my way through max.

some preliminary thoughts

02_11_06

This whole idea started over a few beers with a very close friend gl0tch, as i was explaining the difference between our two ways of working. As a painter/new media artist, mental ninja, he's had the experience of having a great deal of public criticism, from college on. As i attended college for something completely different, cognitive science, I never quite acheived the same levels of exposure to public criticism. Playing a few shows here and there and having a few skilled musicians as friends, often times getting feedback is difficult. Even more so when you up and move across the country, work two jobs, and have barely any time to spend rapping with anyone about audio. And lets be honest, most of us are trying to figure out what the hell we're going to do next anyways, and selfishly keep all the shit we probably should be saying to one another under wraps until we get our own shit together. It all seems rather counterintuitive to me at this moment.

Of course it all could just come down to the fact that I'm tired of being a hermit, at least as far as this is concerned.
